Carter Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students

Criteria: Current Darton State College students who demonstrate a commitment to excellence in their education and chosen field, and are enrolled full or part-time. Applicants must have completed at least 12 credit hours and be registered for at least 6 credit hours for the current or upcoming academic semester. Preference will be given to non-traditional students. (Those who have been out of high school at least 5 years and are currently working toward a degree at Darton State College.) This scholarship is endowed in memory of Margie and Jimmie Carter and the successful scholarship recipient will be chosen by the Carter family or their designee.

Must submit:

  • Scholarship application
  • Essay (two page max) describing you academic and career goals and how receiving the scholarship will assist you
  • A letter of recommendation from a Darton State faculty or staff member, or an employer
  • Have a 2.50 or higher GPA

Scholarship Amount: For 2015-2016 school year the scholarship may be used toward tuition, fees, books or educational expenses with half awarded in fall and half in spring.

Charles M. Jones, Jr. Scholarship

This is a full-tuition memorial scholarship that supports young people pursuing a degree in the arts, with special consideration given to majors in the visual and performing arts. The recipient must have a 950 or higher SAT score/20 or higher ACT score, and a 3.0 high school GPA and previous college work. Recipients are expected to play an active role in extracurricular activities at Darton State College, including performing or assisting in school plays, music performances, etc. In addition, 10 hours of volunteer service at Darton State College per semester will be required. A committee of faculty members and trustees of the Darton State College Foundation choose recipients. This award rotates among the arts departments.

Chelsea Rae Langford Memorial Scholarship in Art

This $2,500 scholarship is given in loving memory and in honor of Chelsea Rae Langford to a student studying art. The scholarship recipient should demonstrate a love of art and compassion for people. This scholarship is not necessarily dependent upon academic achievements or financial need. For more information on the Chelsea Rae Langford Memorial Scholarship, contact Mr. Michael C. Cliff Bowling Scholarship

This is a permanently endowed scholarship and the award is $660 for 2015. This scholarship is named in memory of Clifford J. Bowling, a former Darton State College student, and is to be awarded annually to a rising sophomore science major. Criteria for this award are previous academic performance, and preference is given to pre-veterinary medicine majors and students not receiving other scholarship aid.

Curtis Malone Memorial Scholarship

The Curtis Malone Memorial scholarship is awarded through the College’s Health Sciences Division and was established in memory of Curtis Malone, a former respiratory care faculty member at Darton.

Application Deadline: February 15

Criteria:

  • A Respiratory student in good standing in the program.
  • A Person with a positive can do attitude and willingness to help others.
  • Have demonstrated a strong dedication and motivation to becoming a respiratory therapist and have demonstrated exceptional work ethic in their respiratory coursework.
  • Complete an application
  • Write an essay on the topic “Meeting your dreams by becoming a Respiratory Therapist”

Preference will be given to a non-traditional student making a career change to respiratory care, particularly one that both the applicant and their family are making sacrifices to help the student achieve their dream. The selection committee will consist of the Health Science Division Dean and two full-time faculty members of the respiratory care department.

Darton State College Alumni Association Scholarship

The Darton State College Alumni Association is proud to offer two $250 scholarships each semester. The scholarship recipient(s) will be awarded based on their cumulative GPA of 3.0 (minimum), but also by showing their service in their community and their Cavalier pride.

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • Current or incoming student
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 (minimum)
  • Volunteer or community service

Applicants should return the application with a 500-word essay about their community involvement and how they are or plan to be involved on the Darton campus. Students can reapply and be granted the scholarship up to 3 semesters provided they reapply and continue to meet the criteria.

Deanís Scholar Award

The Dean’s Scholar Award is awarded up to 25 students annually by the Darton State College Foundation. This award is a scholarship for incoming freshmen who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement. The scholarship is worth the total cost of tuition and mandatory fees for the fall and spring semesters. To qualify, students must be a current graduating senior with a college preparatory seal diploma, have a 3.0 GPA, a minimum SAT score of 1000 (combined critical reading and math) or ACT composite of 22, and show evidence of community and school involvement.

Students who are awarded the scholarship must enroll as a full-time student (12 hours) and remain in a degree-seeking track within a transfer or career program. Recipients must maintain a 3.5 GPA and complete a minimum of 30 semester hours to remain eligible. The application for the Dean’s Scholar Award is available through the Office of Admissions at Darton State College. The deadline to apply is March 15. The Office of Admissions determines recipients.

Dougherty County Medical Society Scholarship

Each academic year, a student in a health science degree program at Darton State College is awarded this $2,000 scholarship from the Dougherty County Medical Society through the Darton State College Foundation. The scholarship will be awarded at the Darton State College Honors Award Ceremony each spring Semester. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be enrolled as a Darton State College student.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a health science degree program (health science majors and pre-majors are not eligible to apply). Eligible majors and/or degrees are:
          Cardiovascular Technology                             Medical Laboratory Technology
          Dental Hygiene                                               Occupational Therapy Assistant
          Diagnostic Medical Sonography                     Physical Therapy Assistant
          Emergency Medical Services                         Radiologic Science
          Health Information Technology                       Respiratory Care
  • Must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  • Must have 2 completed recommendation forms from a former teacher(s), program faculty member(s), or clinical preceptor(s).
  • Must have completed at least 1 semester in their listed program.
  • Must type a personal statement of no more than 3 pages describing how your strengths and interests would benefit your program of study at Darton State College.

Applicants will be chosen based on their GPA, their application, the recommendation forms, and their personal statements by the selection committee.  The top 3 applicants will then be submitted to the Dougherty County Medical Society for the final decision to be made.

Dr. Galina Soboleva Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is given in memory of Dr. Galina Soboleva, a beloved chemistry professor at Darton State College. Dr. Soboleva was dedicated to the art of chemistry, loved teaching, and helping her students reach their highest potential. The scholarship is being funded by an initial donation from Battelle Memorial Institute and shall be used for tuition and fees.

The award recipient shall meet the following requirements:

  • Georgia resident
  • Current Darton student
  • Major in a STEM field
  • Completed a minimum of 12 credit hours
  • Minimum GPA of 3.00
  • Volunteer in their community

Applicants should return the application, proof of community or volunteer service, and an essay (two pages max) describing their career goals and why they are deserving of this scholarship. Battelle and their designee(s) will review and select the recipient. Two scholarships will be awarded for the 2015 school year as follows:

  • 1st Scholarship: $1,000 will be awarded for both fall and spring semester if student continues to meet criteria. Funds are paid directly to Darton State College and must be used for tuition and/or fees.
     
  • 2nd Scholarship: $500 will be awarded for both fall and spring semester if student continues to meet criteria.

Dr. Gordon Davis Scholarship for Nursing and Allied Health

This Scholarship is awarded in the fall to two (2) Worth County High School Students majoring in Nursing or Allied Health. This scholarship will be awarded $500 for fall, spring and summer to two students for a total of $3000 per year. Scholarships are awarded for one year.

Requirements:

  • Students must be full time students
  • Must maintain a 2.5 GPA
  • Write an essay on why the student is deserving of the scholarship

Dr. Jerry A. Walton Memorial Scholarship

The Dr. Jerry A. Walton Memorial Scholarship is given annually to a student who has declared a major in teacher education. The recipient must have no less than a 3.0 GPA, be classified as a sophomore, and involved in extra-curricular activities. A committee of social science faculty selects the recipient.

Emergency Medical Scholarship

Students enrolled in the Emergency Medical Program at Darton State College may apply for a half tuition scholarship. For more information, contact Patricia Hotz, program director, at patricia.hotz@darton.edu.

Faculty Memorial Scholarship

Recipients are sophomores who exhibit outstanding academic potential. These scholarships are in memory of faculty and staff members, including Henry O. Adams, A. Doy Beck, Owen B. Murphy, and Susan Kavanaugh. A faculty committee recommends and selects the recipient each year. Students must have a minimum 3.75 GPA, 15-40 semester hours credit completed (at least 12 of these at Darton State College), and service to Darton State College. Students are notified if they meet the criteria, and then will need to apply and have a faculty member complete a recommendation letter.

First Generation College Student Scholarships

This scholarship ranges from $100 to $500 and up to six students may be awarded a scholarship. New students who are first generation college students may apply for this scholarship, and awards are given to students in their first semester. Students must complete an application to receive this scholarship.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a new, incoming student (no previous credit awarded from Darton State College)
  • Must not have more than 12 earned hours from another institution or AP credit (or equivalent)
  • Must be a first generation college student (neither parent possesses a college degree at any level)
  • A minimum 2.5 GPA

Garry Whitehead, PhD Academic Scholarship

This scholarship is established in the Darton State College Foundation, Inc. by Dr. Garry Whitehead, professor of psychology, for the purpose of providing a scholarship for a psychology major at Darton State College. The recipient, who will be selected by the Darton State College psychology faculty members, must be a full-time student and rising sophomore as a declared psychology major, must have taken the SAT or equivalent, must have a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA and a minimum 3.0 GPA in psychology courses, and demonstrate financial need.

Honor Student Scholarships

The Darton Foundation awards a $200 scholarship to Darton honors students based on faculty recommendation. The Foundation funds up to 20 Honor Scholarships in the fall and spring.

James M. Barnett, Jr. Scholarships

Funded by the James M. Barnett, Jr. Foundation, these scholarships are awarded each semester at the recommendation of the Director of Music program to deserving students majoring in music. Ken Allen Rodgers Outstanding Student Leader Award

This award is presented annually to a student that best meets the following criteria:

  • At least 40 semester hours of earned credit at the end of the fall semester
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Service to Darton State College
  • Service to the community
  • Elected or appointed positions held at DSC
  • Demonstrated leadership
  • Impression at personal interview/information conveyed
  • Future goals
  • Effective communication skills

A committee of faculty, staff, and students select the recipient of this award. The names of nominees, plus a short letter of recommendation, should be submitted to the Campus Life department, located in the student center C-226, by any member of the faculty, staff, or student body. The deadline for submitting a nominee is February 28, 2015.

Linda D. Ham Memorial Scholarship

The Linda D. Ham Memorial scholarship is to be awarded annually to first time freshmen, including non-traditional students, majoring in art. Criteria includes a minimum 2.7 high school GPA, submission of an artist portfolio, and submission of an essay describing the student’s reason for choosing art as a major. Recipients are chosen by a representative of the Ham family and representatives of the Darton State College Humanities Division. If no high school students meet the scholarship criteria, current Darton State College art majors meeting the criteria may apply. For more information, contact Mr. Michael Mallard at (229) 317-6244.

Merit Scholar Award

The Merit Scholar Award is awarded up to eight students annually by the Darton State College Foundation. The Merit scholarship covers half tuition and mandatory fees. Requirements are the same as for Dean Scholar Award. The Office of Admissions determines recipients.

Orientation Leader Scholarships

These are $250 scholarships awarded each year to new student orientation leaders after they have completed the orientation sessions in the summer.

Paralegal Scholarship

This scholarship is for a student in paralegal studies and is selected by the Paralegal Coordinator.

Richie Day Golf Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded once per academic year and is only given to a first time freshman. To be eligible for consideration for this scholarship, a student must be eligible to play for the Darton State College Golf team, be a Georgia resident, have a minimum 2.5 GPA, and submit a brief essay explaining goals for the future. Sharon Shearer Memorial Scholarship for Nursing

The Sharon Shearer Memorial Scholarship is for an in state nursing student.

Requirements:

  • 3.0 GPA
  • An essay on why the student is deserving of the scholarship
  • Volunteer in the community
  • A Georgia resident

The Charles D. Chitty, Jr. Scholarship

The Charles D. Chitty, Jr. Scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in a transfer program or a Nursing program. The scholarship can cover in state tuition and fees. Student must maintain a 3.0 GPA or better.

Requirements:

  • Student must maintain a 3.0 GPA or better.
  • Write an essay on why the student is deserving of the scholarship.

The English Merit Scholarship

The English Merit Scholarship is awarded to students with a declared major in English. The student must have a 3.7 high school GPA or a 3.5 college cumulative GPA with no less than a B in any English course. One recipient is chosen each year, and the scholarship is renewable up to four semesters. Students must complete an application to receive this scholarship.

The Gorecki/Albany Chorale Vocal Scholarship

The Albany Chorale provides a $400 scholarship annually to a vocal student at Darton State College. For more information, contact Dr. Claire Fox Hillard, director of music, at (229) 317-6855 or at claire.hillard@darton.edu.

The Liberal Arts Merit Scholarship

The Liberal Arts Merit Scholarship is given up to three students beginning their first semester at Darton State College. Students must be a declared major in a liberal arts field. Students must have a 3.0 or higher high school GPA. Students must complete an application to receive this scholarship, which includes a recommendation from a former teacher, supervisor, or high school administrator.

The Liberal Arts Student Dedication Scholarship

The Liberal Arts Student Dedication scholarship is awarded up to three students in their second or subsequent semester at Darton State College. Students must be a declared major in a liberal arts field, and show dedication to the major through involvement in performances, student organizations, and/or publications. Students must have no less than a 2.5 GPA and must be recommended by a supervising faculty member. Students must complete an application to receive this scholarship, which includes a recommendation from a faculty advisor.

The Roselyn Ware Memorial Nursing Scholarship for Students from Mitchell County majoring in Nursing

The Roselyn Ware Memorial Nursing scholarship was established in loving memory to enable deserving students from Mitchell County to pursue careers in nursing. Miss Ware graduated from Albany Junior College (now Darton State College) and left a legacy to educate nurses.  For more information, contact the Nursing Department at Darton State College at (229) 317-6504 or email bonnie.hardegree@darton.edu.

Criteria:

  • May be either full- or part-time traditional or non-traditional students
  • Must be enrolled or accepted into the nursing program at Darton
