Claire Dyal, of Albany, has been named the 2013 New Century Scholar for Georgia. Dyal will graduate this Friday, May 3, with an Associate of Science degree in psychology.

Dyal is one of 52 to receive this honor. One student from each of the 50 states was selected, as well as one from Canada and the Federated State of Micronesia. Dyal received a $2,000 scholarship and a plaque, which was presented to her at the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Convention held in San Francisco, CA last month. In addition, she will be featured in USA TODAY, AACC's Community College Times, and Community College Journal.

“I was completely shocked to find out that I won,” said Dyal.

Dyal found out she won while attending a luncheon in Atlanta, where she was being honored for the All-Georgia Academic team.

Currently Dyal is a member of the International honor society, Phi Theta Kappa, the English honors society, Sigma Kappa Delta, and previously was part of the Darton String Ensemble for two semesters. After graduation from Darton State, she will continue her education this fall at Georgia Southwestern.

Dyal says her experiences at Darton has helped her in so many ways, including helping her discover her love for psychology and preparing her for the next steps of her educational career.

“I have been encouraged by every single one of my professors here at Darton. One of the main reasons I was able to discover my love for psychology was because of my teachers, and their passion for psychology and teaching. Darton has truly given me the confidence and the educational foundation to pursue my goals and I have enjoyed every part of this experience.”

More than 1,800 students were nominated from more than 800 community colleges for recognition. Judges consider grades, leadership, activities and, most importantly, how students extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom.

New Century Scholars are the highest scoring students in each state, plus one student from Canada and one additional student chosen from among one of the remaining seven sovereign nations where Phi Theta Kappa is represented internationally. The New Century Scholars program and All-USA Community College Academic Team, which is sponsored by Follett Higher Education Group and presented by USA TODAY and Phi Theta Kappa, share a common purpose and together recognize outstanding community college students.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 1,285 chapters on two-year and community college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, Peru, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions. More than 2.5 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 135,000 students inducted annually.
