John T. Phillips, III (’68) graduated with an A.A. degree and transferred to the University of Georgia where he received a Bachelor of Science in Business-Finance in ‘70. John is the President of Applied Fiber Telecommunications in Albany, Georgia. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Albany and serves as Chairman; John is a member of Porterfield United Methodist Church and serves on the Board of Directors for Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. John is married to Sarah Howe Phillips (’68). They have been married for 25 years.
Sarah Howe Phillips (’68) graduated with an A.A. degree and then completed a Bachelor of Arts in English with a Secondary Teaching Certificate from the University of Georgia in ’70. Sarah was the 1st Miss Albany Junior College and President of the Collegiate Civitans Club at Albany Junior College (’66 – ’68). While at UGA she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi, both Honor Societies and a member of Chi Omega Sorority. Sarah is a Sustainer with the Junior League of Albany; a privileged member of the Charity League of Albany; she is a member of Porterfield Methodist Church where she is involved in the choir; and serves as a volunteer at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Sarah and John T. Phillips, III (’68), who have been married for 25 years, have two sons, John Temple, IV and Thomas Kirtley.
Tom J. Callaway, III (’69) graduated with an A.S. degree and transferred to the University of Georgia where he received a Bachelor in Business Administration in ’71. He is also a graduate of the Georgia Banking School and the LSU School of Banking. He is the President and CEO of Commercial Bank/SYNOVUS Financial Corporation in Thomasville, Georgia and has been with the bank for 14 years. Tom currently serves as Chairman of Thomas University; he is a member of the Thomasville Team 2000, Loan Committee Chair; Director, Treasurer and Board Member of the Thomasville Music and Drama Troupe, Inc./Thomasville Music and Drama Troupe Foundation; a member of Thomasville Rotary Club; Past President Thomasville/Thomas County Chamber of Commerce; member of Thomasville Landmarks, Glen Arven, and served as Past Chair, Thomasville Planning & Zoning. Tom currently resides in Thomasville, Georgia with wife, Sherrie. They have two sons, T.J (age 20) and Pace (age 19).
G.C. “Ben” Benford, Jr. (’69) graduated with an Associate of Arts degree and the transferred to the University of Georgia where he earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting (’71). Ben is the Senior Vice President and a Financial Advisor for Wachovia Securities, LLC and has been with Wachovia for sixteen years. He has served as the Chairman of the Board for Porterfield United Methodist Church (’98 – ’99) and served as the President of Doublegate Country Club (’03). Ben resides in Albany with wife Laura Copelan Benford (’75). They have two children Kelly Lee (age 22) and Wesley Reynolds (age 20).
Sherman Willis (’69) graduated with an A.A. degree and transferred to Georgia State University where he earned his B.B.A. degree in ’71. He then went on to Emory Law School and earned his Juris Doctorate in ’73. He is a managing partner of the law firm Gardner, Willis, Sweat, & Goldsmith. Sherman continues to play an active role in the Albany community. He is married to Jean Heinemann Willis, (‘69).
Jean Heinemann Willis (’69) graduated from Darton College with an Associate of Arts degree and went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Georgia State University. Jean has served as a past trustee of the Darton College Foundation and continues her service to the Albany community today. Jean resides in Cordele, GA. with husband, Sherman Willis (’69); they have two children Charles Warren Willis and Jennifer Willis Nicely.
