President Sireno Gives State of the College AddressPresident Peter J. Sireno gave the annual state of the college address August 15 in the theatre on Darton's campus. Speaking to faculty, staff, and community members, President Sireno stressed the accomplishments of Darton's faculty and staff and his appreciation for their increased efforts in the wake of unprecedented and drastic budget cuts that have significantly impacted the University System of Georgia's institutions. Alumni NewsDarton Alumni Association Participates in Move-In Day at Student Housing
Alumni Association Continues Discount Card Drive in the CommunityThe Darton Alumni Association is continuing to sell Alumni Discount Cards with great success in the Albany community. The Discount Card can be purchased by anyone. You do not need to be a Darton alum to purchase the card. Featuring discounts with twenty local merchants and no larger than a credit card, it entitles you to one discount per visit - no matter how many times you visit - until June 2012! Anyone who wishes to support the Alumni Association and the Darton Foundation with a $35 donation can do so and acquire the card. Supplies are limited, so act fast! Darton Alumni Association Board Selecting Event CommitteesThe Darton Alumni Association Board of Directors is in the process of selecting committees to oversee the planning and development of events for the fiscal year. Two of these events will provide opportunities for alumni to get involved in bringing alumni and community members to campus through Pics with Santa and Homecoming to be held this winter and spring. Darton Alumni Association to Host Lunch With A Leader ProgramWhat comes to mind when asked to recall your favorite Darton College memory? Chances are you could rattle off many exciting memorable moments that made an impact on your future. How would you like to help create new memories for today's students? The Darton Alumni Association, in an effort to fulfill its commitment to offer mentoring opportunities and career advice to students, will host the Lunch With A Leader Program. The first luncheon will be held this semester and will give selected students the opportunity to learn from Alumni in the community who have established successful careers in their chosen field of study. Darton College's Campus Life Division will show Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on the Intramural field at 9:00 p.m., August 26. The movie is free and open to the public, so bring your blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy the fleeting days of summer. Refreshments are free to those with a Darton College ID. The public may purchase refreshments at a nominal cost.
Members of the Board of Directors of the Darton Alumni Association were on hand August 11-13 to hand out ice cream, water, and converse with students and parents as the students moved into what would be their new living quarters for the next academic year.
Phil Cannon, a local attorney, was appointed August 16 by the city commission, to serve as assistant Municipal Court Judge on an "as needed" basis. The downtown Albany lawyer, who is president of the Downtown Merchant's Association and a member of the Albany Dougherty Inner City Authority, brings a wealth of experience to the bench.
