Jamil Davis is an exceptional young man, born and raised in Albany, GA. He dropped out of high school during his freshman year and two months later obtained his GED. Jamil then decided to enroll at Darton State College to pursue a nursing career.
“For as long as I can remember I’ve known what I wanted to do with my life. Science has always been a passion of mine, and nursing in particular has interested me,” said Jamil.
Jamil chose Darton not only because of its convenient location, but also because of its reputation as one of the best two-year colleges in the state of Georgia. “The nursing instructors at Darton were tough, the lectures and classroom discussions were intense, but the critical thinking skills, clinical skills, and professionalism taught there allowed me to excel in the clinical setting. I feel that Darton State College’s Department of Nursing provided me with great tools which helped me succeed.”
After graduating from Darton, he continued to excel in his studies and earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a dual master’s degree in nursing - family nurse practitioner and nurse educator - at Albany State University. Today he is working on his doctorate in nursing practice while teaching at both Georgia Perimeter College (GPC) and Mercer University. He also helped form the first official Georgia chapter of American Assembly for Men in Nursing (AAMN) earlier this year at GPC.
“Nursing has broadened my horizons and has caused me to focus on health related issues within my community, as well as health related issues in the world. I enjoy being in a profession that assists individuals with their needs,” he says.
While at Darton, Jamil took advantage of a financial program afforded from the State of Georgia for students pursuing a degree in healthcare to help pay for his education. The financial assistance was very important to him; which is why he plans to support the Darton State College Alumni Association. It’s a small way that he can support his alma mater and new students.
His advice to students is to prioritize, stay focused, study, and to utilize available resources. “Darton is a great institution with a good student/professor ratio and I would absolutely recommend Darton State College to anyone that is considering college.”
