Barbara McLendon is one of Darton’s biggest cheerleaders. For more than 20 years, she has dedicated her time to serving Darton State College – both in the classroom and as an alumnus.
Mrs. McLendon started her college career at Darton State College as a nontraditional student; a stay at home mother with three young daughters. While at Darton she juggled her household and a family business, and still graduated with a 3.88 GPA. Upon graduating from Darton, she continued her education completing both her bachelor’s and master’s degree in education. Mrs. McLendon came back to Darton to teach part-time as an instructor of mathematics and worked her way up to associate professor of mathematics, where she remained until her retirement in 2008.
During her tenure, she was highly regarded by her students and peers, and was awarded the Service to the College Award four times (1994, 1997, 1999 and 2003) and the NISOD Teaching Excellence Award three times (1994, 1997 and 1999). She served as the director of the Darton College Math Tournament for twelve years and was the chair or co-chair of six committees. She also stepped in and served as the acting chair of the Science/Mathematics Division while a permanent replacement was sought.
Since retirement, Mrs. McLendon continues to serve Darton State College through the Alumni Association as the treasurer and a member of the scholarship committee. In addition to supporting Darton State College, she also is active in her church and enjoys spending time with her grandchildren.
Mrs. McLendon is a cherished part of our Darton family and was recently nominated by the Alumni Association and the Office of Institutional Advancement for the Regents’ Hall of Fame Alumni Award. The award winners will be announced at a special reception on March 22, 2014.
