“Without ideals, without effort, without scholarship, without philosophical continuity, there is no such thing as education.”

Welcome Students!

Business Office
By: Whitney Wiggins

Now that there are over 3000 students attending Darton College, the Business Office sees on average, each student at least once.  Whether to pay fees, get a parking decal, pay parking tickets, pick up paychecks, get change, or simply inquire about tuition assistance, students are in and out all the time.  I have noticed that all other "major" offices are well decorated, newly carpeted and painted, and do not have boxes, books, or dilapidated office machinery just sitting out in the open.  Besides the need for storage, the paint and carpet (that must have been here for the college's grand opening in 1966) could also be replaced.  Unless of course we are saving it as a tribute to Albany Junior College's first graduating class. Other than the amount of students that the Business Office sees daily having increased greatly, it was also brought to my attention that 3 out of the last 5 years Business Office personnel have received "Staff of the Year."  Shouldn't such remarkable employees have a more pleasing work place? Luckily, the drab surroundings have not affected these employees too much because every time a student enters they are greeted with a smile and most of the time, they leave feeling better than when they came in.

Zip Code Changes in Southwest Georgia
By: Margaret Moss

Effective July 1,2002, The United States Postal Service introduced changes in the Postal ZIP Codes that directly effect all of us who live, work or attend College in the Albany area of Southwest Georgia.

A sign of growth, indeed.

Simply put, our former 3-digit Code span, 317, contained more zip code assignments than what was allowed by the former ZIP Code planning capacity, so it became necessary to split our territory to a new 3-digit in order to ensure capability of coding new territory as growth continues. Many of the ZIP Codes formerly in the 317 3-digit ZIP span have been split to the 398 3-digit span. Some examples are Bainbridge, Blakely, Bronwood, Colquit, Dawson, Fort Gaines, Leary and Shellman while Moultrie and Tifton have not had their ZIP Codes split , thus retaining their 3-digits but have been assigned new 4th and 5th digits.

A Zip Code split means that an area which was previously covered by one ZIP Code is now covered by two, with a boundary line separating the two new ZIP Codes. (continued on page 3)
