Gaming Consoles in Darton State College Residence Halls - Wireless Network Access
The purpose of this document is to implement a standardized convention for the use of networked gaming consoles in the Darton College residence halls.
For this document:
Gaming Consoles – Examples of gaming consoles may include Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii.
Note: Sony PlayStation 3 is not compatible with our network, and therefore not permitted on our network.
Networked – A condition in which a collection of hardware components and or computers are interconnected by communication channels that allow interaction between the devices.
MAC address (Media Access Control address) – A unique identifier assigned to network interfaces.
Wireless Networking – Any type of computer network that is not connected by cables of any kind.
Wireless LAN (Wireless Local Area Network) – Uses a wireless distribution network method to link two or more devices, usually providing a connection through an access point for Internet access.
Students living in the Darton College residence halls are permitted the use of networked gaming consoles only on the Wireless LAN.
A distinct and isolated Wireless LAN is available for gaming use only. All other wireless devices, such as desktop computers, laptops, tablets, mobile devices, etc. will be denied access on the gaming Wireless LAN.
SSID and Security:
In order to gain permitted access to the gaming Wireless LAN, students must first register [via email only] the MAC address of their gaming console, along with their name, residence hall, and room number with Network Support Services at IT.ServiceDesk@darton.edu. Simply, registering a MAC address does not guarantee that permitted access to the gaming Wireless LAN will be approved or granted. Access will be at the discretion of Network Support Services. As such, access to the Darton College network for gaming console purposes is not a guaranteed service and may be altered or denied to any individual or as a whole at any time without notification.
Only basic, required network port access will be allowed for network gaming. Any request for specific or special port access for network gaming will be denied.
Network Support Services will maintain the registration for gaming consoles. All permitted access to the gaming Wireless LAN will be purged after each summer semester and prior to each fall semester.
