Working Title: Assistant Librarian – Systems/Reference
Department: Learning Resources Center
Purpose:
This position plays a major role in marketing the library’s services.
Nature of Work:
The Systems/Reference Librarian develop, implement, monitor, and modify technology services, policies and procedures which support users and library needs.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Coordinate and direct the activities of library systems and related technology
- Liaise with computer and systems support personnel
- Maintain library web pages, forms, and modules
- Run reports using Microsoft Access and other software to assist with day-to-day library automation operations
- Disseminate information on developments/changes in library-related technology with regard to enhancements in computerized searching,, important Internet sites, and other improvements
- Bring equipment failures and similar problems interfering with library operation to the attention of the appropriate parties
- Assist as possible in solving equipment and other related problems
- Serve on college committees
- Participate in community service activities
- Share reference/circulation duties with professional staff
- Orienting patrons to library resources including the Darton library catalog (GIL), print indexes/reference sources, GALILEO and the internet
- Assisting patrons with acquiring library cards, checking out materials, and accessing reserve materials
- Assisting teachers and classes with individual assignments
- Answer reference questions as needed in person or by telephone or e-mail
- Other responsibilities as assigned
Required/Desired Knowledge, Abilities & Skills:
- Competence in planning and setting objectives and priorities
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Able to motivate and organize staff for effective group action
- Thorough understanding of automation developments and capabilities
- Computer literate
- Ability to establish excellent customer relations skills with library patrons
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff and students
Required Education and/or Experience:
- MLS degree from an ALA accredited library school
- Experience in circulation/reference work
Supervision:
The Assistant Librarian-Systems/Reference Librarian reports to the Director of the Library
