Working Title: Advising Center Coordinator
Department: Student Affairs
Purpose:
This is a key staff position which involves coordination and oversight as well as a variety of student-centered functions for the Division of Student Affairs.
Nature of Work:
The Advising Center Coordinator plays an important role in retention efforts by overseeing peer tutoring and by coordinating advising for new, returning, and current students and helping them make a strong connection to the college.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Coordinate overall academic advising in the Advising Center, including handling add/drops, change of majors, and registration (both phone and face-to-face)
- Provide academic advising for an advising load of undecided students
- Refer students to the Admissions Office, Financial Aid Office, and Registrar’s Office as needed, and coordinate plans with those offices, especially during New Student Orientation, add/drop days, and registration days
- Coordinate the work of the Peer Tutoring Center, including enlisting and training new peer tutors, promoting the Peer Tutoring Program, matching clients to tutors, and supervising and evaluating the work of tutors and a tutoring assistant
- Collect data to assess and evaluate advising
- Cooperate with faculty members as needed to secure peer tutors and to improve advising across campus
- Provide training and orientation materials for new advisors in the Advising Center
- Work with the Call Center and with appropriate work study students to coordinate early registration opportunities for new and readmitted students
- Maintain the confidentiality of student academic records
- Refer students to various support services (counseling, disability services) as needed
- Interact with Career Center personnel to help undecided students get career testing and choose a major
- Keep current with trends in the area of advising, including participation in conferences sponsored by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA)
- Serve on the Academic Advising Committee and on other campus-wide committees as assigned
- Work with personnel in the Online Division as needed to coordinate advising and tutoring services for online students
- Request purchases and oversee the Advising Center and Peer Tutoring Center budgets
- Other duties as assigned or approved by the Vice President for Student Affairs
Required/Desired Knowledge, Abilities & Skills:
- Experience working in a multi-disciplinary atmosphere
- Commitment to the success of two-year college students
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of academic programs, requirements, policies, and procedures
- Interest and effectiveness in working with and assisting students
- Willingness to participate in professional development activities
- Ability to work independently while maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers in a team environment
- Ability to work effectively in a service environment that is subject to frequent interruptions
- Skill in setting priorities that accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities
- Understanding of student development, student learning, and career development
- Ability to listen and to analyze the academic needs of students
- Good computer skills
- Experience using BANNER preferred
Required Education and/or Experience:
Master’s degree preferred; bachelor’s degree required; one year experience in an academic setting
