Working Title: Graduate Assistant in Athletic Training

Department: Physical Education

Purpose:

Nature of Work:

The Graduate Assistant in Athletic Training is a highly responsible position that requires administrative, organizational, communication, and athletic training skills. This position involves high level communication with coaches, student athletes, and athletic administration.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Daily Basic Duties:

  1. Restock supplies on counter and taping area.
  2. Straighten counter top and clean training room.
  3. Clean treatment and taping tables.
  4. Launder and fold towels/wraps.
  5. Maintain hydro collator unit.
  6. Wipe down and disinfect whirlpools.
  7. Clean coolers and hang up to dry on rack.

Athletic Training Room Duties:

  1. Taping and bracing that may be required
  2. Assist with sports medicine treatments as directed.
  3. Follow proper protocols for treatments.
  4. Use modalities properly and as directed.
  5. Prepare medical bags/kits for practices and events. (this includes all emergency equipment)
  6. Prepare ice chest for practices and events.
  7. Prepare water for practices and events.
  8. Educate student athletes on prevention of specific injuries.
  9. Demonstrate proper exercises for rehabilitation and prevention. 

Practice and Event Duties:

  1. Assist with any duties that are necessary during event coverage.
  2. Load/unload medical equipment for transportation to event site.
  3. Properly administer First Aid and Emergency Care.
  4. Act as a First Responder to any emergency situation and be able to activate 911/EMS.
  5. Notify the appropriate personnel of any emergencies.(Head Athletic trainer, Athletic Director, Campus Police, EMS)
  6. Refill water coolers as necessary.

Administrative Duties:

  1. Document/log any medical treatment performed.
  2. Document/log any over the counter drugs (OTC’s) given out.
  3. Help with physical set up and administrating pre participations physicals.
  4. Help review each student athlete’s pre participation physical.
  5. File each individual physical in filing cabinet according to sport and follow up to make sure each student athlete’s file is complete.
  6. Copy and file documents as needed and directed.
  7. Give the head coaches of each sport a copy of current athletic insurance policy.
  8. Fill out proper paperwork to file insurance claim.
  9. Make doctors appointments as needed.
  10. Assist with the drug testing procedure.
  11. Assist with hydration testing for wrestling.
  12. Provide education on matters when asked by student athletes or coaches.

Other duties may be assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer and/or Athletic Director.
