Working Title: Director

Department: Plant Operations

Nature of Work:

The Director of Plant Operations is responsible for the management and administration of the physical plant, including building maintenance, custodial services, utilities, landscape and grounds maintenance, outdoor athletic and physical education facilities, major repairs and renovation, vehicle pool, hazardous waste management, and security.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The Director will continually monitor expenditures to ensure that college funds are effectively utilized and expended with the Plant Operations’ budget allocation. The Director will assure the employees of Plant Operations are properly trained (including “Right to Know” rules and regulations), evaluated, and assigned appropriate duties and responsibilities to assure the Plant Operations staff provides a high level of customer satisfaction. The Director will establish work routines and schedules of all staff to assure that all services are accurately and efficiently delivered to clients in a timely manner, confirm that schedules are adhered to by staff, and evaluate the quality of work performed through frequent, routine, job-site inspection.

The Director assists the college’s administrators, the University System’s Office of Facilities, architects, and engineers with the development of project scope for work to be performed by outside contractors. In accordance with contract requirements, the Director will monitor contracted projects to ensure these projects are constructed in accordance with approved specifications, and the Director must ensure that these projects comply with appropriate building codes.

Required/Desired Knowledge, Abilities & Skills:

Ability to work with architectural plans and specifications; ability to work with diverse constituencies; above average written and oral communications skills; computer literate, which includes the use of standard word processing, spread-sheet, internet, and email system software.

Required Education and/or Experience:

Minimum requirements: a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with major studies in architecture, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, construction management, business administration or related fields, or a combination of related education and experience will be considered; a minimum of seven years recent progressive administrative and managerial experience with the plant operations areas of an educational institution or other organization(s), which would demonstrate the applicant’s ability to provide leadership as the college’s Director.

Supervision:

This position reports to the Vice President for Business & Financial Services.
