Swine influenza is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus. Swine flu causes high levels of illness and low death rates in pigs. Swine flu viruses do not normally infect humans, but some swine influenza infections have occurred in people.
The current strain of swine influenza is of great concern because it has some of the characteristics medical experts expect to see in pandemic influenza – a worldwide outbreak of a dangerous disease for which we do not have an existing vaccine.
