Albany Police Department and Darton Team Up to Make PSAs

August 05, 2013

ALBANY – The Albany Police Department (APD) and Darton State College's student television organization have teamed up to produce a series of Public Service Announcements (PSAs) this summer. Phyllis Banks, Media Director at APD, met with a group of students in July to pitch the concepts. The students, with Banks' help, will produce at least three PSAs to raise awareness about important safety issues in the area.

“I was so excited and proud to be apart of something like this. Normally students at bigger schools wouldn't get this kind of opportunity so early in their educational careers so it really means a lot,” stated student Carly Shiver.

The first production has already wrapped-up and will be airing on Government Access Channel 16, Channel 19, and local news channels including WFXL. The students produced a 30-second and 15-second PSA about slowing down for school zones as students across the area prepare to head back to school. Darton student JT Fellows states, "these PSAs could possibly save someone's life after watching these because we remind them of various things-- slow down for school zones, don't text and drive, don't speed, etc." The other two PSAs will be out later this year, and will feature members of the Albany Police Department's Traffic Unit and personal vehicle security.

The students are members of DSTV, the Darton Student Television student organization, and are producing these videos on their own time between semesters. Darton student Keevyn Girdner said he didn’t mind working outside of the semester or on the weekends as he thought, “this could be a good opportunity to help those who put their lives on the line daily to help everyone else." All of the students involved in this project are Broadcast Journalism majors at Darton State College.

In addition to this collaboration with APD, DSTV produces a monthly news show called Cavalier Connection, which airs on Channel 19 and is featured on the group's YouTube Channel.
