Darton Faculty, Staff, and Students to be Recognized at Regional American College Theatre Festival
January 16, 2014
ALBANY – Darton State’s Theatre Program will have a strong showing at this year’s Region 4 Festival of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF), to be held in Roanoke, Virginia from February 4-8.
Based on her direction of The 39 Steps this past fall, Ms. Rebecca Dodson, technical theatre director and facilities manager, was nominated and chosen to direct in the Festival’s New Play Program. Ms. Dodson will be among a select group from the region chosen to direct the award-winning ten-minute student written plays during the Festival. In addition, based on her scenic design of The 39 Steps, Ms. Dodson was nominated to present her design work at the Region’s Design, Technology and Management (DTM) Exhibition for adjudication by a panel of prominent theatre designers and technicians.
The student honors awarded this year are the nomination of Jessi Robison to exhibit her sound design for The 39 Steps in the DTM Exhibition, and John Sanders and James Strawder, who were nominated to compete in the Region’s Irene Ryan acting scholarship competition. Their acting partners are freshmen students Courtney Engle and Jason Winchester.
Finally, for the first time, Darton State’s Theatre Program will present a piece of Devised Theatre at the Festival. A group of eight students, under the guidance of Theatre Instructor Deborah Liss-Green, created an original play based on ethnographic study and improvisation that will travel to festival. The piece based upon the experiences of a young man and woman pre-, during, and post- war, will preview at Darton on January 30 at 4:00 p.m. in the J-Building rooms 121-123.
