ALBANY – Darby Oliver, of Lyons, has been named Darton State College’s Academic Recognition Student for 2014. Each college in the University System of Georgia annually selects one student to honor for their academic achievements.

Oliver, a sophomore at Darton, is a double major in pre-veterinary medicine and business administration. In addition to her studies, Oliver is very involved on campus and in the community. She is an active member of the International honor society, Phi Theta Kappa, and the English honor society, Sigma Kappa Delta. Currently, she works in Darton’s recycling operations and volunteers part-time at Bush Animal Clinic.

According to Oliver, she was in complete shock when she found out that she had been chosen as the 2014 Academic Recognition student. “I felt so honored that Darton had chosen me to be the student to represent them. It really made me feel like all of the countless hours of studying and hard work had really paid off,” said Oliver.

Oliver has always focused on her academics. In 2012, she graduated from Toombs County High School as Valedictorian and STAR Student of her class. She is a Darton Dean Scholar Award recipient, which she says is just one of the many reasons why she chose Darton State College to begin her college career.

After graduation in May, Oliver plans to attend the University of Georgia to complete her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine, and hopes to one day own a veterinary clinic in “one of Georgia’s great cities.”

As the Academic Recognition Student from Darton State College, Oliver’s name will be read on the floor of the Georgia Assembly and entered into the official record. She will also receive declaration at Darton’s Honors Program held in April.
