Darton's Nursing Program Adds Additional Accreditation
April 21, 2014
ALBANY – Darton State College's RN to BSN Completion program was recently granted initial accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). Accreditation is a voluntary process and evaluates nursing programs based on standards and criteria that are best practices in nursing education nationally. The ACEN accreditation program is founded on the belief that specialized accreditation contributes to the centrality of nursing for the public good and provides for the maintenance and enhancement of educational quality through continuous self-assessment, planning, and improvement.
The RN to BSN completion program was developed by Darton's Nursing faculty and is in compliance with all of the standards and criteria for accreditation. The ACEN recognized the nursing faculty's engagement in scholarly activities as a strength of the program.
“The Nursing Division faculty and staff are very pleased of this accomplishment, as the accreditation process is a rigorous review,” stated Dr. April Reese, dean of nursing.
Darton State College received approval from the Board of Regents to start offering four-year degrees in May 2011 and subsequently received initial approval by the Georgia Board of Nursing for the RN to BSN Completion program. The first cohort class of the RN to BSN completion program began fall semester 2012 graduating its first Bachelor of Science in nursing students July 2013.
The RN to BSN completion program prepares graduates with an associate degree in nursing with additional skills in management, leadership, health promotion, community health, and research. The RN to BSN program is three semesters for full-time and five semesters for part-time. Courses are taught online to accommodate working students, with some hybrid courses that require additional time spent in lab or clinical settings.
Darton State College's nursing program graduates more pre-licensure students than any other college in the state of Georgia. Darton State College’s program has provided more than 2,500 nurses to the Southwest Georgia area since the College opened its doors in 1966. The associate degree in nursing program is also accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Nursing (ACEN).
