Dr. Hilyard Awarded Distance Learning Honor
Dr. Janice Hilyard, dean of the Online Learning Division at Darton College, has received the 2009 Wagner Award for Outstanding Instructional Support.
The Outstanding Instructional Support Award recognizes outstanding achievements by an individual in developing and implementing projects to improve support and services for distance students and/or faculty.
The Division of Online Learning was established in 2007, and Dr. Hilyard came to Darton as the dean in June 2007. Dr. Hilyard's vision for Darton is one of becoming an international leader in online education by combining quality education with quality services.
Instructor training and support is a high priority for Dr. Hilyard. She has implemented an Online Lead Faculty program at Darton College that provides mentors for new adjuncts and has created online classroom training for Darton's instructors. At her request, a new Online Education Committee was established as the faculty committee to recommend improved services and processes to support teachers and students in online learning.
Her latest creation is a course in the college's virtual classroom product, WebCT VISTA, that will function as an online faculty community. To be implemented the upcoming fall term, it will provide a central location for resources and materials, and group and individual mentoring.
Dr. Hilyard has been a leader in distance education for 20 years. Prior to coming to Darton, she led distance learning units at three Kansas colleges as well as Florida Community College at Jacksonville.
