Darton Named One of 11 Campus Technology Innovators
August 05, 2010
Darton College is featured in the 2010 Campus Technology Innovators issue. Campus Technology is a monthly publication focusing exclusively on the use of technology across all areas of higher education.
The magazine recognized Darton College for its use of motion capture technology that allows students to examine the motions of the human body in precise, 3D anatomical detail. One of the applications is a pairing of motion capture with virtual anatomical modeling, used in the dance department to analyze the movements of a dancer's body.
Darryn Ostrander, director of the Instructional Technology department, says the system puts viewing controls in the hands of instructors and their students, who can review the recording of a dancer from different angles as critiques are done.
Jennifer DeBritton, director of dance, says Darton is offering its first fully online class in dance this fall, in which the technology will be used for part of the class material covered.
Darton is making plans for a motion capture facility to be shared by several departments within the college.
Darton is one of only 11 institutions – selected from 448 nominations – to be featured in the magazine. In 2006, the magazine recognized Darton College as an innovator for its use of true 3D stereoscopic technology.
