Director of Continuing Education to Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro

November 02, 2011

Michael White, Darton’s director of Continuing Education and Economic Development, has been asked to co-lead a charitable climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in February of 2012. Mount Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania, East Africa.

Mt. Kilimanjaro reaches heights of up to 19,341 ft. in elevation. The climb is non-technical (no ropes or specialized climbing skills required), but will involve high altitude trekking. The purpose for this charitable climb is to raise money for the building of theLeah Ngini Women’s and Community Center at Africa International University located in Karen, Kenya, and to raise money and awareness for Darton College’s Department for Global Education.

The climbing team is comprised of men and women from around world, and each team member will solicit sponsorships in the hopes of raising a team total of $200,000. This is in response to the $200,000 raised in 2011 by another team of climbers.

When White returns from the climb, he plans to use his experience climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to promote Darton College’s Global Education and its quest to help students expand their world knowledge through travel to other countries. Working closely with Dr. Ulf Kirchdorfer, dean of global education, he plans to take a group of Darton students and community members to Kenya in 2013.

On Saturday, Nov. 19, from 6–9 p.m., White will host a slide show and benefit climb at the Darton College indoor climbing wall, “The Crag.” Admission will be free, but donations are suggested.

For more information, contact Michael White at (229) 317-6726.
