Approximately 425 graduates are eligible to receive an associate of science, associate of arts, associate of applied science degree, or a certificate. Following commencement, the Darton College Foundation and the Student Government Association will host a reception for the graduates and their families in the Student Center.
Darton student Hakim Burks travelled a difficult path to graduation. A 1998 graduate of Crisp County High School, Hakim tookclasses at an Atlanta college for a short time before dropping out. After then attending a local college and dropping out again, he found himself at looseends. He worked for a couple of years before becoming involved in illegal activities.
Hakim spent several years in that world until two life-altering things happened. He had a daughter in 2006 whose birth helped him start to turn his life around. The other event was a tragedy – a friend of his was murdered. After that, he determined to change his life and made the decision to take classes at the Darton College Cordele Center.
The first person he saw when stepped into the Cordele Center was Caroline Fielding, dean of the Center. She recommended that he go into the medical field, and he eventually decided on the respiratory care program.
Hakim says Darton “is an excellent school. It’s like a family – my fellow students are like my sisters and brothers.” He thinks very highly of Darton and especially of Fielding and also the respiratory care faculty – Curtis Malone and Bill Thomas. After graduation, he plans to work as a respiratory therapist.
Darton College’s allied health pinning will be held December 13 at 3 p.m. in the Cavalier Arena.
The nursing pinning ceremony will be held December 13 at 4:30 p.m. in the Cavalier Arena.
