The NATYCCA Ranks Darton College Athletics No. 4 In Overall Fall Sports Poll
February 11, 2012
The National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) announced Darton College as one of the fall leaders of the 2011-12 NATYCAA Cup Standings.
The NATYCAA ranked Darton College Athletics as No. 4 among the nation’s junior college athletic departments.
“This is yet another reflection of the hard-work and dedication shown by our student-athletes, coaching staff and our very supportive faculty and staff here at Darton College,” Darton College Athletic Director Mike Kiefer said.
All of Darton’s fall sports won conference titles, including men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s cross country. Both soccer programs also won Southeast District Championships before the women’s soccer program finished as national runners-up, and the men’s soccer program captured a third-place finish at the NJCAA Championships.
The Darton College men’s and women’s cross country teams finished 9th and 13th, respectively, at the NJCAA half-marathon championships.
Twenty-five Darton College student-athletes earned All-Region XVII honors. Three became All-Americans, and sophomore Diego Ramos became the 2011 National Soccer Coaches Association “Athlete of the Year” for men’s soccer.
Head women’s soccer coach Ken Veilands and head men’s and women’s cross country coach Bruce Skiles earned Region XVII “Coach of The Year” awards, while men’s soccer coach Bart Sasnett earned “NJCAA Southeast District Coach of The Year” and “NSCAA South Regional Coach of The Year” honors.
Two of the athletic departments that finished ahead of Darton College in the poll had football teams that finished in the NJCAA top 10 – Butler Community College and Iowa Western Community College – which led to an edge in scores since Darton does not compete in NJCAA football.
