“Remember the Titans” Coach Herman Boone to Speak at Darton State College
ALBANY - Darton State College announced today that Coach Herman Boone will be giving a keynote address, "Becoming a Titan in Tough Times," on Wednesday, October 10, as part of Darton's Distinguished Lecture Series. He will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Center, room 266.
Coach Boone is a former American high school football coach, and most famous for coaching at the newly integrated T.C. Williams High School. The challenges he faced and is his inspirational story was later captured in the 2000 Disney film "Remember the Titans" starring Academy Award-winner Denzel Washington.
In 1971, three high schools merged and formed T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Va. Boone was named the head coach of the Titans over the local favorite from a former all-white high school, increasing racial tensions. Boone and his coaches were faced with achallenge of a lifetime — unifying their players to a team whose common vision was to respect each other and win football games. In the end, the coaches showed the community how to put aside their intolerances and join together to support their children. The Titans became one of the best teams in Virginiawith a 13-0 record and went on to win the state championship that year.
Tickets for this event are $5 for non-students and free to currently enrolled Darton State College students. In addition to Coach Boone’s keynote address, attendees may buy tickets for a special meet and greet dinner with the coach for $20 each. Tickets may be purchased in advance and at the event.
