Darton State College Hosting 1st Annual Life Raft Debate
ALBANY - Who would you choose to rebuild civilization in a post-apocalyptic world? Darton State College’s faculty members will make their case for survival tomorrow at Darton's 1st Annual Life Raft Debate. The event will take place tomorrow, October 24 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in Darton's Theatre.
The Life Raft Debate, sponsored by the Forensics and Debate Club, and the Honors Program, is designed to help Darton students learn about different disciplines and argumentation skills. The tradition of the Life Raft Debate began at Montevallo College and has been featured on This American Life.
"We are excited about the debate! It will be a fun event in which our students will get to see some of our best and brightest faculty members defend their disciplines and make the case for their very survival," said Victoria Smith-Butler, assistant professor of communications and debate club advisor.
The scenario is that a comet has struck the earth and water levels begin to rise immediately. Faculty, students, and staff run for higher ground. Only a few lucky faculty members manage to get to the top of the K building to cling to the roof as the water is still rising. Suddenly, a life raft of survivors appears but it only has room for one more person. Which remaining faculty member will be saved? Each remaining faculty member will present arguments about why they should be saved to help rebuild civilization.
