ALBANY - Darton State College's Continuing Ed and Economic Development department recently announced two new courses that it will offer. The courses are a Georgia Prescribed Burn Manager, and a White Tailed Deer Ecology and Management course.

The Georgia Prescribed Burn Manager course teaches participants the essentials needed to be a successful prescribed burner. The course covers many subjects, including how to draft a written plan for the burn, weather effects on fire, smoke management, and Georgia laws pertaining to prescribed fires. For full certification a participant must complete the two-day course, provide an affidavit of burn experience, affidavit of citizenship, and pass an exam. The Georgia Prescribed Burn Manager course is April 16 and 17. The cost is $95, and includes two lunches plus course materials.

The White Tailed Deer Ecology and Management course will be instructed by Dr. Karl V. Miller, professor of wildlife ecology at the University of Georgia and by Brian P. Murphy, CEO and wildlife biologist for the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA). The course will provide participants with a solid understanding of deer ecology and management; and include the latest research on deer behavior, scent communication, antler growth, genetics, and much more. The White Tailed Deer Ecology and Management course is scheduled for May 22 and 23. The cost is $290, which includes lunch one day, course materials, and a one year membership to the QDMA.
