Another Darton State Faculty Member Shines Again

ALBANY - Darton State College is proud to announce that Dr. Kerri Newton, PT, DPT, was awarded the Outstanding Technical Teacher Award by the American Technical Education Association (ATEA). Dr. Newton, associate professor and director of the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at Darton, was presented the award recently at the 50th National Conference held in Chattanooga, TN. She was selected as the recipient out of more than 250 candidates nationwide.

The award is presented each year to a full-time post-secondary technical education or career program instructor whose performance and contributions are exceptional. Dr. Newton uses collaborative learning strategies that involve problem based learning, case studies, simulations, and peer teaching to foster student success in the classroom. And, through her learning strategies she has helped the PTA program at Darton meet and exceed its national pass rates for licensure.

Dr. Stacey Marshall, dean of the health services division at Darton; nominated Dr. Newton for this prestigious award. In her nomination letter, Dr. Marshall said, “Dr. Newton is truly an innovative teacher and she has made substantial changes to our PTA program. Her teaching methods have led to the success of her graduates both on boards and in the workplace.”

Dr. Newton has been a faculty member at Darton State College since August 2003. She has received many awards while at Darton, including Advisor of the Year in 2006, NISOD Excellence Award in 2009, and the Outstanding Community Service Award in 2012. In addition, she has served as district director and board member for the Physical Therapy Association of Georgia, chairperson of the Georgia Coalition of Physical Therapy Educators, and is a component leader of the American Physical Therapy Association.

Dr. Newton holds a doctorate in physical therapy from Temple University, and a master’s in physical therapy from the Medical College of Georgia. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Troy State University.
