April 15, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The NJCAA named Darton State College basketball star Michelle Mitchell a D-1 All-American, 2nd team, this week.
With Michelle at the wheel, the Lady Cavaliers exploded into one of the best basketball programs in the nation. During her sophomore year the team finished 12th in the NJCAA, had a perfect 18-0 record in the Cavalier Arena, won the District Championship and Region 17/GCAA Championship. Mitchell was awarded the GCAA Player of the Year award before she took the Lady Cavs to their first national championship tournament appearance in over a decade.
"Michelle has had an outstanding two years at Darton," Lady Cavaliers head coach Lea Henry said. "She took our program to another level.
"She's also an outstanding student and a very classy young lady."
Mitchell scored 549 points for Darton during the 2012-2013 season, ranking her the 4th highest scorer in the NJCAA. In the same season she had 235 rebounds, 93 assists, 73 steals and averaged 16.6 points per game.
"Michelle is everything you could want in a student-athlete," Henry said.
Mitchell said the Darton State coaching staff had a huge role in her success.
"They helped me get better on the court and off the court as a person," she said.
Presently Mitchell is being courted by dozens of NCAA D-1 basketball programs.
"She's had 60 or 70 schools express interest in her," Henry said. "She's visiting Mercer, Sunday, and Stetson in a couple of weeks. She still has a ways to go before she makes a decision on any of them."
