Darton State College Launches Free Online College Math Prep Course
May 22, 2013
ALBANY - Who says nothing is for free? Darton State College launched a free college math prep course on Monday. The course will make it possible for thousands of students to prepare for the math portion of the Compass Placement exam free of charge, opening them to the possibility of achieving a higher education.
"The Compass Math Review course is designed as a review for those who would like to obtain a college education, but are uncertain about taking college math. The course covers the basic math skills required to prepare a student for college level math, and is perfect for those who have been out of school for some time and need a refresher. The class is self-paced and instructor led; we are here every step of the way to help students succeed," said Renita Luck, online learning coordinator for Darton State College.
The course is free with no registration fees or required books, as the course is presented digitally through Darton State's learning management system. The course is self-paced, but should take participants approximately three to six weeks to complete.
When participants register, they will be sent a math anxiety pre-assessment that will help gauge his or her level of comfort with math. On the first day of class, participants will complete a pre-course quiz that will help customize the course to fit their needs. Darton State's FREE Compass Math Review course launched Monday, May 20, with additional start dates of June 3, June 17, July 1, and July 15.
"We are pleased to be able to offer this course that helps provide a broader access to higher education. Offering this preparatory math course will open educational doors to individuals who may not have thought they could do college level math. The course is reflective of the commitment of Darton's faculty to innovation while using technology to educate a larger number of students," said Darton State College President Dr. Peter Sireno.
The College plans to use this course as a way to engage with other communities around the state, as well as attract participants to continue their education at Darton State College, either in-person or online.
