Helpful Hints
Creating a Multiple-Choice Test Template:
- Create a new blank word document
- Turn on the Forms toolbar - View, Toolbars, Forms
- Center align the first line
- Change the font to Arial size 14
- Type a test heading with Course Name/Number - ex: History 1121
- Press the enter key
- Mouse click the "Text Form Field" icon ab| on the Forms toolbar
This is where you will enter the test name - Press the enter key
- Click the "Text Form Field" icon ab| on the Forms toolbar
This is where you will enter the test date - Click the "Form Field Options" icon (hand holding form) on the Forms toolbar
- Select 'Date' as the type
- Select a Date format of your choice
- Press the enter key twice
- Select the "Left alignment" icon on the formatting toolbar
- Type "1." and press the tab key
- Insert a Text Form Field from the Forms toolbar
This is were you will type your first question - Press the enter key twice
- Select the "increase indent" icon (blue right arrow) on the formatting toolbar
- Type "A." and press the tab key
- Insert a Text Form Field from the Forms toolbar
This is were you will type your first answer - Press the enter key
- Type "B." and press the tab key
- Insert a Text Form Field from the Forms toolbar
This is were you will type your second answer - Enter your C & D answer fields
- Press the enter key twice
- Press the "decrease indent" icon (blue left arrow)
- OPTIONAL
If you want your answers listed in two columns
a. Select you answers
b. Select "Format" from the menu
c. Select "Columns"
d. Select "2" - Select and copy your entire question one
- Paste the question at the paragraph maker past questions one
- Continue pasting for the number of questions that you need on your template
- Renumber the questions
- Select "Tools" from the menu, then "Protect Document"
- Select "Forms" in the dialog box and press "OK"
- Select "File" from the menu and then "Save as"
- In the "Save as type" box, select "Template" then give the file a descriptive name
Notice that the destination folder has changed to "Templates". Word will save
the template in the proper template folder for you. - Close the file
- Select "File" from the menu, then "New"
Your template will be listed under the General Tab - Double-click on your template
This will open a new blank document based on your template. - Type your fist question and tab to the first answer and type. You will use your tab key,
shift + tab, and arrow keys to navigate between your fields - Select "Tools" from the menu, then "Unprotect document" to edit outside of the form fields.
