Levels of Certification
AEMT
Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) The AEMT provides basic, limited advanced and pharmacological interventions to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with acute out-of-hospital medical and traumatic emergencies. AEMT’s work with other EMS and health care professionals as an integral part of the emergency care team.
Paramedic
The Paramedic is an allied health professional whose primary focus is to provide advanced emergency medical care for critical and emergent patients. The Paramedic’s scope of practice includes invasive and pharmacological interventions to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with acute out-of-hospital medical and traumatic emergencies. Paramedic education represents the highest level of out-of-hospital care. Graduates of the Paramedic Certificate Program are encouraged to take the additional prescribed college courses in order to complete the Associate of Science degree in Emergency Medical Services.
Paramedic (Fast Track)
This program is designed for the student with no previous EMS experience. This is an accelerated, four semester program that combines the educational requirements of the EMT, AEMT, and the paramedic. The student will complete all of the EMT coursework in the first semester. Upon passing the national certification at the EMT level, the student may be eligible to transition into the paramedic program while simultaneously completing the AEMT coursework. Upon completion of the AEMT certification exam, the student will complete the final two semesters of paramedic coursework. Additionally, the student must maintain a 3.0 GPA in the EMT/AEMT coursework and have the recommendation of the instructor(s) at the completion of each certification level.
