Matthew Cochran is a singer/guitarist/composer who eschews the categorizations of traditional classical music. A modern-day Troubadour, Cochran mesmerizes audiences with his “breathtaking ability to highlight his clear, light, tenor with intricate accompaniments on the guitar” (Soundboard). He is equally at home performing Schubert lieder, Appalachian folk ballads, Gershwin, or cutting-edge works by today’s leading composers.
Cochran’s inventive and unique repertoire consists of his original compositions and arrangements, plus a growing number of commissions and collaborations with composers such as Robert Beaser, Edie Hill, Apostolos Paraskevas, and Kristian Anderson. The Old Toad Guitar Duo recently premiered Cochran’s American Unoriginals, a collection of re-imagined traditional tunes; and Chuckleberry Flynn, a song-cycle for 2 guitars and voice. In the 2012-2013 Season, Cochran will premiere his settings of Yeats poems called A Mermaid, Not A Punk, plus a number of arrangements for voice and guitar including songs from Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday In the Park With George. In collaboration with tenor Steve Scott, Cochran will premiere his voice and guitar arrangement of Robert Schumann’s Liederkreis, Op. 39.
Cochran has recorded two acclaimed CDs: his solo guitar recording Shenandoah (Clear Note) explores the influence of dance and song in the music of Beaser, Arnold, Rodrigo, and others. The Tantalus Quartet’s self-released Debut received rave reviews from critics: "The range of dynamics on this disc is unmatched in the genre. Tantalus Quartet is breaking new ground in terms of their aesthetic." (Rosewood Review). 2013 will bring new releases by the Old Toad Guitar Duo, Tantalus Quartet, and a solo voice and guitar project featuring Cochran’s “Found Song Cycle” based on texts from Found Magazine.
Cochran’s 2012-2013 concert season includes appearances in Germany and Poland with the Tantalus Quartet, and tours of the Southeastern U.S. with the Old Toad Guitar Duo and Tenor Steve Scott.
Cochran is Assistant Professor of Guitar Darton State College in Albany, GA. He performs on D'Addario Strings.
