Victoria Butler

Victoria ButlerVictoria Smith-Butler joined the faculty at Darton College in the fall of 2009. She currently teaches Public Speaking and Small Group Communication and is co-advisor of the Forensics and Debate Club. Victoria came from The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi where she taught Public Speaking, Small Group Communication, and Business and Professional Communication. She is also pursuing her Ph.D. in Speech Communication at USM and studying the relationship between speech style and persuasion in the courtroom. At USM, she also received her M.A. in Communication and B.A. in Speech Communication and Political Science.

Victoria is also a graduate of Emory University School of Law and holds a J.D. She has worked in both criminal and civil law. Before returning to school for her doctorate, she spent time in Nakuru, Kenya helping to start up a non-profit for AIDS orphans in the region. After trips to Zambia and Zimbabwe and living in Kenya, Victoria believes that Africa is one of the most beautiful places in the world and hopes to return soon.

Victoria's research interests include persuasion and language. She loves politics and reading, but her favorite activity is spending time with her 15-month-old daughter, Isabel, and her husband, Ted, who is also an assistant professor of history at Darton College.
