Elizabeth Perkins, Dean
Dr. Anita Underwood
Ms. Underwood was born and raised in Hungary. Under her mom's supportive influence, she developed an interest in literature and languages. After she won a competitive scholarship to study in London, England, she decided to study English with the plan of teaching this universal language in Hungary. Her plans changed when she met a US Marine who was stationed in London. After moving to the United States in the mid 1990s and overcoming the culture shock, Ms. Underwood continued to pursue her academic interests. She received a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Maryland University College, a master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Regent University, and a master's degree in English from National University. She is currently working on a doctorate degree in online education. She has been teaching at Darton since 2003, online since 2005.
After moving from duty station to duty station with her husband for a decade and a half, Ms. Underwood is now firmly planted in Norfolk, Virginia, with her now retired husband, Pete, and two adorable cats, Misha and Bella. She continues to care deeply about her students, Realist and Naturalist literature, and the theory and practice of transforming online classes from electronic lecture halls to collaborative, student-centered learning environments.
