Dr. Alan X. Zhang
With a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Linguistics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Alan Zhang came to Darton College in 1993. Since then, he has taught all levels of English courses both in the classroom and via cable TV, GSAMS, and on the Internet. He believes in student-centered instruction and has been active in promoting internationalism and distance learning on the campus.
Dr. Zhang has had two books of translation published by the PLA Press and dozens of articles published in magazines and journals such as TESOL Matters, Rhetorical Studies, Zhejiang Youth, and the IIP Journal. He has also regularly presented at national, regional, and state-wide professional conferences. He has served as an English-Chinese interpreter in the United States, Europe, and China.
His recent honors and awards include NISOD Teaching Excellence Award (1998), Darton College Teacher of the Year (1998, 2003), Board of Regents’ Distinguished Professor (1998-1999, 1999-2000), Who’s Who among America’s Teachers (2002), and nominee for Board of Regents’ 2004 Teaching Excellence Award and the Carnegie Foundation’s 2004 U.S. Professor Award.
He has traveled to China, Spain, and Yugoslavia. His hobbies range from movies and classical music to sketching, Chinese calligraphy, instrument playing, digital photography, and home movie making.
