Darton State College Social Science Department | Psychology
What is it?
Psychology offers a wide variety of career options for those interested in human and animal behavior. Some psychologists provide counseling (for example, marriage counseling, substance abuse counseling, child and/or adolescent counseling, or general counseling services), while others work for government agencies, schools, colleges, universities, or businesses. Those who work for the government may specialize in statistical analysis, survey design, testing procedures, or specialties related to law enforcement. In schools, colleges and universities, some psychologists teach and perform scientific research, while others counsel students. Psychologists working for businesses and corporations are likely to work in human resources departments, or in a human relations specialty.
Darton State College offers an Associate of Science (A.S.) in psychology. The required classes are offered in face-to-face format, or online. Students may enroll in day classes, evening classes, or online classes to meet their individual scheduling needs. The A.S. in psychology is available completely online for students at a distance, or for local students who prefer the convenience of online classes.
What can I do with it?
Transfer to a four-year college or university: The A.S. degree in psychology is considered to be a transfer degree. This degree is equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor’s degree, and after completing their A.S. at Darton, students usually transfer to a four-year college or university to finish a bachelor’s degree in psychology. With a B.S. or a B.A. degree, graduates may find employment in business settings that do not require specialized psychological training. For teaching, research, specialized business pursuits, or counseling the minimum requirement is generally a master’s degree in psychology.
