COMPUTER PROGRAMMER

Computer programmers write programs and other instructions that enable computers to perform specific tasks. There are two types of programmers -- those concerned with applications (the final products of computer operations) and those who develop systems (programs that tell the computer what to do).

Work Activities:

  • Analyze and study data on problems
  • Prepare plans or flow charts to solve problems
  • Write detailed coded instructions for computers to follow
  • Test programs to ensure they respond as anticipated
  • Write instructions to guide workers during production runs
  • Make reports of program development

Skills and Aptitudes:

  • Communicate technical information
  • Write reports, record procedures and explain ideas
  • Organize ideas and data
  • Organize time and work under pressure
  • Visualize objects from drawings and pictures
  • Knowledge of programming techniques and limitations
  • Work with one or more programming languages
  • Excellent numerical and verbal skills
