DENTIST

Dentists examine and treat patients' teeth and oral tissues to prevent and correct dental problems.

Areas of Specialization:

  • Public Health Dentistry
  • Pediatric Dentistry

Work Activities:

  • Examine teeth and gums
  • Take and interpret x-rays
  • Take impressions for artificial teeth and dentures
  • Administer sedatives or anesthetics
  • Supervise assistants cleaning teeth, mixing substances for tooth fillings, and keeping records
  • Use and operate many specialized instruments
  • Teach proper brushing and care of teeth
  • Advise patients on most suitable treatments
  • Perform surgery on mouth and jaw

Skills and Aptitudes:

  • Knowledge of dental equipment, diagnostic techniques, and treatment
  • Ability to convey concepts of preventive dental care to patients
  • Computer skills
  • Good judgement of space and shape
  • Good verbal, written, communication and interpersonal skills
