The Division of Science and Mathematics at Darton College is actively involved with providing quality educational programs to the regional community it serves. These programs have served primary, elementary, middle, and high school students. They have provided teachers with supplements to their curricula and continuing education workshops. A description of each of these programs is provided below.
Activity Modules for Teachers in Grades K-8 -- Darton College, the Flint River Valley Georgia Youth Science and Technology Center, the Southwest Georgia Regional Educational Service Agency, the Thronateeska Heritage Museum, and the Georgia Science Teachers Association formed a consortium and developed portable classroom activity modules for teaching science. Each module contains a complete set of hands-on manipulatives, student activities, and teacher resources. All activities are tied to appropriate Quality Core Curriculum Objectives. Teacher training workshops for SDUs are being offered to train teachers in the effective use of modules. Modules can be checked out by teachers for two weeks. Darton College is coordinating module scheduling, delivery, pick up, and restocking.
The Darton Regional Science Fair is affiliated with the state and international fairs. It encourages middle and high school students to do minor research and present it through the fair system. Workshops are provided for students and teacher-supervisors.
Math Counts is a mathematics competition for middle school students. It is designed to improve math skills for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Qualified students compete at national level.
