  1. Sources of Information:

Books : GIL Library Catalog (https://gil.darton.edu) NOTE: for local Darton College students you must come on campus to register to view Netlibrary eBooks but students who live at a distance and who take only distance learning classes (we will check) may email research@darton.edu to be registered to read Netlibrary eBooks -this procedure may take a few days-see last section for info. 
  3. Articles: (newspapers, magazines, journals)- GALILEO databases (galileo.usg.edu) or just look in a print magazine.
  4. Online: Internet searches via Google (www.google.com) or Ixquick (www.ixquick.com) and sites such as www.cnn.com, walb.com/ or www.biography.com/

  11. Get into the account by:
  12. Enter your Library Barcode (the number from your ID card or Library card).  If you don’t know the ID number go to http://www.darton.edu/oit/dcid.php
  13. Enter your PIN  -For PIN info go to http://www.darton.edu/~dclib/Online_ResearchPIN.php or Circulation Desk at (229-317-6766)
  14. Enter your Last Name
  15. CLICK on the Logon button
    16. Input student ID number (library card number) on 1st line and last name on 2nd line then click button 'Login to my account'
    NOTE: if the system rejects your number or name, make certain you have typed it correctly.  If it still doesn’t work, check with the Circulation Desk (229-317-6766) ***You can see what you have Checked Out and Renew Online (if allowed) at this point***
  16. Password Access to GALILEO and CQ Researcher:
  17. CLICK on Request Link (Request): GIL Catalog Links
  18. Click on OK Button (OK) to get the GALILEO Password: CLICK 'OK' button for GALILEO password
  19. For GALILEO:
  20. Copy/ write down the word in quotes (don’t include the quotes):

  22. Paste or Type in the Password: GALILEO password login
  23. For CQ Researcher go to http://library.cqpress.com/cqresearcher or for Short Stories for Students at http://infotrac.galegroup.com/itweb/dartcoll enter the same (GALILEO) password as both username and password.

    Click on Databases A-Z for a Great Search. NOTE: GALILEO Scholar is good but can be complicated.
    NOTE: You may choose to search by Subject, Journals, etcetera BUT for a quick search which requires less filtering we recommend the following search:
    For General Searches you can search a wide variety of great sources using ProQuest, Lexis Nexis (bios, business, law etc), CQ Researcher (controversy-see www.darton.edu/~dclib/CQResearcher.php) or EbscoHost.  For Literary Criticism Literary Reference Center, Literature Online Reference Edition and Short Stories for Students (use GALILEO password as username and login) are often good choices.

    25. TO START SEARCH: CLICK on the tab: Databases A-Z. THEN Choose A Choose Academic Search Complete or ABI Inform

    Click on Choose Databases, Choose Full Text, Expand as you want and Type in search terms
      26. CLICK in the boxCheck Box NEXT TO the Database  Do NOT click on the actual words. THEN CLICK on the OK button OK button to click on at the end.

  26. CHOICES:Limit to Full Text and/or EXPAND to include synonyms and plurals
  27. ACTUAL SEARCH: This search will be more focused than the search in GIL for books. To get information you will often use the broad subject term "and” the particular theme you are exploring. You can use an asterisk (*) to find all forms of a word. For example, comput* finds computer or computing.

  30. Citation with either PDF article OR HTML Article NOT BOTH.

  31. Citation with both HTML and PDF article:There is Full Text seen after the word Citation for both regular HTML and PDF (viewable with acrobat viewer from Adobe)
  32. INTERNET SEARCHES: (EXAMPLE) Ixquick at www.ixquick.com:
  33. Type your subject or (for biographical info) name and the word biography in the search box: Ixquick search at www.ixquick.com on Malcolm X biographical information
  34. RESULTS: at least one good site on Malcolm X: Results from ixquick search website with biography

    35. NOTE: Beware of regular internet sites, however, because they DO NOT ALWAYS have accurate information and may even be material from some elementary student's own paper.  Authoritative sites will often be from the government (such as the CDC www.cdc.gov/), respected news sites such as CNN or the New York Times, organizations like the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org) or educational sites from college and university professors with .edu at the end.

To get help with spelling using online dictionaries, to see how to cite the information you find (using MLA or other styles), and to find other information on research projects and writing papers you can see: WRITING AND RESEARCH (www.darton.edu/~dclib/writingresearch.php) from Library Bookmarks (www.darton.edu/~dclib/darlib3.php) linked from the Library Homepage (www.darton.edu/~dclib/) or just CLICK on the Library Information link at the bottom of the GIL home page (https://gil.darton.edu).

Go to pines.public.lib.ga.us to search the book catalog for your local Georgia public library.  Public Library cards are free of charge to Darton College students with valid ID and are also available for free in most counties of residence.  Good research sources include Congressional Researcher Ref. JK1 .C66 or www.darton.edu/~dclib/CQResearcher.php, News/Business magazines such as Time, Newsweek & Fortune, Newspapers such as the Atlanta Journal and the NY Times (available in the library and online), and Television news such as cnn.com, abcnews.go.com/, and www.foxnews.com/
  39. Some Reference Books for Literary Criticism: LOOK in the author index at the back of the HIGHEST numbered volume. Some will have also have title indexes in paperbound yearbooks.  Indexes give volume, page # and abbreviated title for criticism of an author’s work.

  51. You can register after finding an ebook or you can do a GIL catalog search on the word Netlibrary: search using the word netlibrary
  52. The NetLibrary book has the words [computer file] or [electronic resource] in the title: Click on the highlighted words of the title netlibrary books are listed as [computer file] or [electronic resource]
  53. When you see the information about the book you can go to the NetLibrary link by CLICKING on the words An electronic book accessible through GALILEO, click here:

  54. To register (on campus only-after registering you will only need to LOG IN with User Name/Password): CLICK on Create a Free Account: Netlibrary Links
  55. Fill in the requested information then click on Create Account
  56. Logging on to use NetLibrary (after registration-you can log on from any internet connection)
  57. CLICK on View this eBook to view the book you’ve chosen  OR CLICK “Log In”
  58. THEN fill in the User Name/ Password at the screen and search for the book you want
  59. Viewing: NetLibrary books are not like regular books. GOOD: Searching through NetLibrary books for particular words or phrases using the Find /Search tabs.  BAD: Small screen with limited printing.
NOTE: Disconnecting (Logging Off) if you signed into GIL press the Logoff Your Account link when finished.  Otherwise the next user may be able to access your account.
